GENERAL:

Review of Group Suffolk Elite Ram Sale:  The Elite Sale held at Manfield was well supported by Club Members with 64 Rams offered for sale. 50% sold at an average price of $470, most members participating were happy with the outcome. Although very few potential purchasers were present, those that did   Buy were apparently pleased and impressed with the rams and were reported to say they will  bring others with them to future sales. Of the stock agents present our thanks to those who took an active and prominent part in the proceedings, and it is hoped that their enthusiasm for the event will see many farmers encouraged to come to the next auction.

Suggestions for improvement included an explanation of Central Suffolks and what they are about; and a review of the day, date and advertising.

As a group committed to continue this year a motion ‘that we have another two Elite sales’ was passed.                                                                       Brown/ Simpson

Advertising Campaign: Recommendations and alterations to the campaign included

                Remaining with Countrywide

Running a larger Advertisement for 4 months

Including an Advertisement in Inland Sheep, the Countrywide Supplement

Submitting material for an Editorial in Countrywide, a free service.

A motion ‘to investigate the merits of Suffolk Advertising by Internet’ was passed.

                                                                                                    Cowper/ Brown

J Cowper will contact A Sims re this possibility.

Review of Ram Sales: The committee talked about and acknowledged the effect the Composite Rams Sales are having and resolved to increase awareness of the merits of Suffolk Rams in as many ways as possible

Direction for 2004: This years focus will be two fold,

Research:- the need to be involved with associations such as Massey,  SIL

                                And associated groups.

Funding to target advertising and selling. Query as to availability of statistics.

J Kyle will report back at the next meeting  on Market Definition. Education 2004 targets an interesting and informative speaker at our AGM  in March. B Simpson offered to approach Wil Wilson to speak to us then.

S Morton, M Brown, and B Simpson to co- ordinate, and arrange.

Ram Hogget Trial: There are fewer ram lambs than usual in the trial, however the 24 involved have put on tremendous weight, raw data is to be circulated. The computing being compiled by H Qinlivan will be completed following the final weigh and scan.

Sire Service Scheme:  This service will not be available to club members this year. Consideration has been given to the time constraints involved in offering this service prior to mating decisions being made and the difficulties involved.

Other initiatives to promote Central Suffolks Inc.:  this subject has been covered as we go.

Breed Committee Elections: Two members are required to represent the area on the Breed Committee which involves a meeting in Christchurch and another as part of the annual Suffolk Tour. Our representatives have been R Aitchison and J Cowper.

R Aitchison retires from active stud breeding with the Complete Dispersal Sale, 10th February, 2004, of Duns Suffolk Stud, founded in 1961. We wish the Aitchisons all the best for the auction and for the future, and thank Roger for his current representation on the breed committee.

J Cowper continues in this capacity.

J Kyle accepts our nomination as a representative.

Additional Business: The AGM will be held in conjunction with the final day of the Ram Hogget Trial, probably on the 10th or 11th March, 1pm. Notices will be sent out.

Date of next meeting:  This will be the date of the AGM, held at Banklea, in the farm woolshed of Richard and Margaret Brown, Kiwitea, Kimbolton Rd, Feilding.
